All-Star Benefit Gala & Auction

Gala Celebration: What happened? What's Next?

September 7, 2019, marked the beginning of an exciting new era at TASIS Dorado. More than 350 people attended the Gala Celebration, and I am pleased to report on our plans for a Wellness & Athletics Center.

First up during the evening, Federico Stubbe Jr. gave an exciting, detailed presentation, in which he unveiled the architectural renderings for a state-of-the-art gymnasium complex at TASIS Dorado. The proposed facility will blend our classic, mission architecture with a bold, contemporary style and put TASIS Dorado on the level of the best private schools in the world.

The new Wellness & Athletics Center will have an air-conditioned arena with wood floors and seating for more than 750 spectators. The large, center court can be divided into two smaller courts for volleyball, basketball, or indoor soccer. Specially-treated glass windows will allow the space to be filled with natural light.

In addition, there will be locker rooms with showers, fitness rooms, a rock climbing wall, multi-purpose rooms for exercise and dance, and rooms for culinary arts, counselors, a nurse’s station, and other specialists.

Next, Betzy García, a Board director and TD parent, gave a passionate, inspiring speech about the vision and commitment she and her husband Carlos Delgado have for a high-quality athletics facility. This vision started before Hurricane Maria and was not extinguished by the storm. Betzy described the fundraising campaign needed to make this dream a reality. The projected cost of the Wellness & Athletics Center is $6.5 million. The plan is to break ground on construction in Spring 2020 and complete the project by August 2021.
To accomplish this ambitious goal, we need to raise $3 million--about 50% of the total.

Extraordinary leadership gifts have already been given by the Delgado Garcia family, the Stubbe family/PRISA Group, the Shoen family, and Fernando González for a total of $1.2 million. In addition, many corporate sponsors have pledged their support (*see below). The Gala Celebration--between ticket sales, sponsorships, auctions, and raffle--brought in over $300,000. This means we are about 50% of the way towards the $3 million--but we must reach our goal before we can break ground.

The Board of Directors is fully committed to the Wellness & Athletics Center project and 100% are giving to the cause. We are also hoping for a high rate of participation among our current and alumni families. And we are looking for additional leadership gifts to help us raise the remaining $1.5 million.

Every gift matters, no matter how small or large. Whether $5 or $10, $50 or $100, $50K or $100K, your participation and leadership matters. To make an online gift or stop by our Development Office to discuss "naming rights" and other opportunities to make a difference, click here

Since our founding in 2002, we have grown quickly and accomplished remarkable things.

In 2004, at the start of our third year, we participated for the first time in interschool athletics. There were 14 male and female teams that first year in grades 4 to 6. For each home game, TASIS had to erect tents, so that student-athletes and spectators could have shade.
Today, there are 56 teams participating in four interscholastic leagues from elementary school to high school at TASIS Dorado! This means that 60 percent of our student body is active in interscholastic sports.

Sixty percent is an impressive number, but having an air-conditioned facility with locker rooms and other resources will encourage even more students to find their niche in healthy movement and activity. You remember what it was like to be a teenager. Would you want to go to class dripping with sweat after PE class? Would you want to get into a car or bus with your peers all hot and dirty? Showers and locker rooms are needed for our students.

Adding a gymnasium with air conditioning, physical fitness facilities, and a dedicated space for our wellness program will add immensely to our community and our mission as a school. Our students will further develop their leadership skills and cultivate important life skills, including discipline, teamwork, resilience, sportsmanship, and humility. It is the goal of our Wellness Program to have every graduate leave TASIS Dorado with a desire to lead a rewarding and active life.
If you were ever part of a team, you know it formed your character and taught you vitally important life skills.

Our students have excelled across the island and beyond. TASIS Dorado teams are highly respected and our athletes wear our colors with pride. For our students, the opportunity to study at a school with a rigorous, college-preparatory curriculum, a rich arts program, AND a quality athletics program has been life-changing. We invite YOU to be part of adding to a school that changes lives.

In addition to athletics and physical education, we see this center as a place where a wide range of services and resources related to wellness will be available to all our students and teachers. There is an ever-expanding body of research showing the profound connection between the psycho-social, emotional, physical, spiritual, and intellectual aspects of human flourishing. We intend to address the well-being of the whole person, for both students and faculty.

Together, we can make transforming changes at TASIS Dorado for the sake of our children that will positively affect their future and that of Puerto Rico. So, we ask that you give generously to make this dream a reality. The sooner we reach our goal, the sooner we can break ground. Please contact us if you have any questions. Thank you!
Very sincerely yours,

Timothy Howard
Head of School
